We’re excited to confirm that Evesham Chess Club will officially launch on Monday 20th April.
Whether you’re a complete beginner, a casual player, or an experienced competitor, you’re very welcome to join us for our first club night.
The launch will take place from 7:00pm – 8:45pm at Wallace House Community Centre, Oat Street, Evesham, WR11 4PJ.
Expect a relaxed and welcoming evening with friendly over-the-board chess, casual games for all abilities, and a chance to meet other local players.
Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.
We’ll be using the free public space at Wallace House, and the café will be open during the evening.
The equipment is now on its way to us, and we’ll be sure to share photos of everything once it arrives.
We’re delighted to share that Evesham Chess Club has been awarded equipment through the ECF Grassroots Support Programme.
A big thank you to the English Chess Federation and the Grassroots Support programme for helping make this possible. The equipment will help us get the club up and running and support chess in the Evesham community.
The organisers have been working very hard behind the scenes, visiting venues and discussing plans. We now have rough venues and potential launch dates, so more news will be coming very soon.
We’re always happy to welcome more players whether you’re interested in casual, social, competitive, or learning chess.
We had a great turnout from a group of enthusiastic Evesham Chess Club organisers today!
It’s fantastic to see so much support and energy behind bringing regular chess to Evesham and the surrounding area. With this team involved, we’re confident we can turn our vision into a reality.
More details about our official launch day will be coming soon — watch this space! 👀
The organisers of Evesham Chess Club have agreed to meet this Sunday at 10:30am (22/02/2026) at Orto Lounge in Evesham to discuss the venue options we have identified and determine what would be acceptable for the club during its initial period.
The aim of the meeting is to make a clear decision so we can move forward with confidence and begin establishing regular sessions.
This meeting is primarily for those who have expressed an interest in being helping hands with running the club or taking on organiser roles, as they will be responsible for overseeing and running the club week to week.
That said, others are very welcome to attend if you would like to have a chat about the possible direction of the club.
We have also submitted an application to the English Chess Federation Grassroots Funding scheme on 11 January 2026 for equipment.

Since the piece went out, we’re up to 17 sign-ups — plenty to start a weekly chess night. We’re still working behind the scenes on venue options and speaking with the Worcestershire Chess Association (WCA) & the English Chess Federation (ECF).
Please keep spreading the word — every share helps!

A few of us spent time in town reviewing possible venues. Nothing set in Evesham stone yet, but we had a lovely time chatting to people and scoping out spaces. We’re writing a report on the venues to send out to possible members.
The interest list keeps growing — thank you! We’d love to hear from even more players (beginners to seasoned).

Let’s bring real, over-the-board chess to Evesham — together!
Inspired by Evesham’s proud heritage, our logo is a modern take on the town’s coat of arms. A crowned gold king chess piece represents leadership; wheat sheaves echo the Vale of Evesham; a gold bell honours the Bell Tower; and stylised feathers reference Henry V, who granted the town its charter. Together, these elements root the club in Evesham’s rich history.
