A fantastic milestone for Evesham Chess Club as our U1650 team secured our first league victory with an away win against Warndon Chess Club on Monday 12th October!

Following our opening defeat against Worcester White Bishops, it was brilliant to bounce back with a win and make a little bit of history for our newly reformed club.

It's particularly encouraging to see two new clubs fielding teams in the Worcester & District Chess League. Both clubs are helping to grow competitive chess across Worcestershire, providing more opportunities for players to enjoy the game. A big thank you to Warndon Chess Club for hosting us, and we wish them every success in their first league season.

Evesham Chess Club suffered a 3–1 defeat against a strong Worcester White Bishops side on Thursday, in our first match of the Worcester & District Chess League (U1650).

Despite facing opponents with a significantly higher average rating, our players put up a determined fight across all four boards. Every game was closely contested, and on another day the final score could have been much closer.

A special mention goes to Daniel Tulcan, who produced an excellent performance to secure a well-deserved draw against an opponent rated over 300 points higher and who has represented Worcestershire at U1650 county level! 👏

It was an enjoyable evening of competitive chess, and we would like to thank Worcester City Chess Club for their warm welcome and hospitality.

Although the result didn't go our way, there were plenty of positives to take from the evening as Evesham continues its first season back in Worcestershire league chess.

Evesham Chess Club made an excellent start to its first season in the Worcestershire Chess Association leagues, drawing 4–4 against Kidderminster in the Rapidplay Division 2 U1650.

It was Evesham’s first ever league fixture, and a particularly encouraging result against a Kidderminster side who won the rapid league last season.

The match consisted of two rapid games on each board, with players swapping colours for the second game. Evesham battled well throughout the evening to earn a share of the points.

A great first league result for the new club and a very positive start to our first competitive season.

An exciting milestone for Evesham Chess Club as we begin our first season competing in the Worcestershire Chess Association leagues.

For the 2026/27 season, Evesham has entered three teams, giving our members opportunities to play both classical and rapid ECF-rated league chess:

• Evesham 1650 – our U1650 Classical team.

• Evesham 1650 Rapids – our U1650 Rapid team.

• Evesham 1350 Rapids – our U1350 Rapid team.

Having three teams in our first season is a fantastic start for the club and means we can offer competitive league chess to players across a good range of ratings and experience.

A big thank you to everyone who represented Evesham Chess Club (Stuart Keen, Stuart Adams, Daniel Tulcan, Martin Whitworth) in our first ever rated team match in the Worcestershire Chess Association U1650 Summer Cup at Redditch on Wednesday 5 August.

It was a significant milestone for our new club and a great opportunity for our players to gain valuable experience of competitive rated chess ahead of the main league season.

The Summer Cup has brought together a strong selection of clubs from across the Worcestershire Chess Association, with teams from Worcester, Longbridge, Kidderminster, Redditch and Evesham all taking part in the U1650 competition.

A special thank you to Graham Kemp for captaining and organising the Evesham team, and to everyone who travelled to Redditch and represented the club.

We really appreciate everyone giving their time to support Evesham Chess Club as we continue to develop more opportunities for local players to enjoy competitive chess.

Well done to the whole team, and we look forward to the next round on Wednesday 19 August! ♟️

Another great evening at Evesham Chess Club, with 21 players attending our 9th Monday session.

This week we focused on Chess Clocks how to set them up, how they work, and some simple recommendations for using them properly during games.

It was also fun to see so many players enjoying games with the clocks and playing in such good spirit.

A big well done to our Evesham Chess Club juniors Jude, Rory, Oscar, Grayson and Oleh who played in the Worcester Megafinal on 28th June.

Some of our Evesham juniors have links to Prince Henry’s, Bredon Hill and St Egwin’s schools, who deserve thanks for supporting junior chess in the school environment.

It was great to see Evesham based junior chess players enjoying competitive chess and getting the chance to play against other young players from across the area and beyond.

We are really pleased to see junior competition chess growing locally.

Well done everyone keep playing!

Another great evening at Evesham Chess Club, with 21 players attending tonight, including 2 new faces.

It is brilliant to see the club continuing to build a friendly local chess community for juniors, adults, beginners and experienced players.

A big thank you to Stuart Keen for helping with the setup tonight much appreciated.

We also have might have Evesham players attending the Megafinal on Sunday so best of luck to everyone taking part!

Thanks again to everyone who came along and supported the club.

Congratulations to Graham Kemp on winning the Ball Cup.

Graham finished joint second in the main table, which meant a semi-final was needed to decide who would go through. Graham managed to win the semi-final, then went on to play the final and win that as well.

A fantastic achievement, especially as Graham said: “I have never won a chess competition in my life before, so you can imagine, even at my age, I’m beyond thrilled. I particularly enjoyed the friendly spirit of the tournament shared by all players.”

Graham has also been one of the people working hard to help get Evesham Chess Club established, so it is brilliant to see him enjoying success over the board as well. Well done Graham a superb result!

Well done to the Didelot family, who represented themselves and Evesham at the 46th Birmingham Rapidplay.

Arthur had an excellent result in the Minor section, scoring 4/7, with William also putting in a strong performance and scoring 3.5/7. Xavier competed in the Inter section and scored a solid 3/7 against tough opposition.

It is great to see players connected with Evesham getting involved in competitive chess and helping put Evesham Chess Club on the local chess map.

A fantastic effort from all three well done!

08/06/2026

We held our 6th chess night at Wallace House Community Centre and were delighted to welcome 23 players, including 4 new faces joining us for the first time.

It was another enjoyable evening with a mixture of casual games, friendly competition, analysis and plenty of conversation. We continue to see a wide range of ages and playing strengths attending, from complete beginners learning the game to experienced club players.

The continued support from both returning and new players is greatly appreciated and it is encouraging to see the club growing week by week.

If you have ever considered trying chess, whether you are a complete beginner or a seasoned player, you will be made very welcome.

07/06/2026

We are pleased to confirm that Evesham Chess Club now has its own official bank account.

This is an important step in helping us establish the club for the long term and will allow us to collect membership fees, accept donations, purchase equipment, pay venue costs, WCA Costs, WCA League entry, Junior Team costs, and support future club activities.

As a result, we will now be reviewing a membership structure and costs to help cover venue hire and other club expenses. No decisions have been made yet, but we expect to share more information soon. We again thank Wallace House for allowing us to use their venue for the launch period.

We will also be discussing this briefly at our club night on Monday 8th June, so please feel free to come along and share your thoughts.

Thank you to everyone who has supported the club so far. It's great to see chess growing again in Evesham! All welcome.

01/06/2026

We held our 5th chess night at Wallace House Community Centre and we were delighted to welcome 24 players.

Even better, we welcomed 4 new faces to the club, continuing the encouraging growth of chess in Evesham and the surrounding area.

The evening featured plenty of friendly games and players of all ages and abilities enjoying over-the-board chess together.

It is fantastic to see a thriving chess community developing in Evesham.

We provide boards, pieces and clocks, so just turn up and enjoy an evening of chess in a friendly and relaxed environment.

There is also interest from several organisers in developing the club further, including the possibility of a junior weekend chess session, entering a team into the Worcestershire Chess Association league, and running internal ECF-rated tournaments once the club structure and administration are fully established. Please talk to organisers about what you want from the club and anything you are interested in.

29/05/2026

We have now submitted our application for an official Evesham Chess Club bank account and are currently awaiting approval.

Once opened, the account will allow us to collect membership fees, receive donations, apply for grants, purchase equipment, pay venue costs, and generally help ensure the long-term future of chess in Evesham and the surrounding area.

26/05/2026

It was great to see Evesham Chess Club organiser Graham Kemp taking part in the 56th Cotswold Chess Congress 2026 in the Minor (U1550) section.

Graham continues to be an active supporter of chess across Worcestershire and it's always encouraging to see club members taking on the challenge of competitive over-the-board tournaments.

If you've never played in a congress before, don't be put off there are sections for players of all abilities, maybe talk to Grahams experance next Evesham Chess Night!

Hopefully we'll see even more Evesham players taking part in tournaments over the coming year! 👏♟️

16/05/2026

Congratulations to Graham Kemp on securing a win for Worcestershire in the recent U1650 match against Kent.

Unfortunately Worcestershire suffered a couple of unavoidable default losses which proved difficult to recover from overall, but everyone appeared to have a good time and the matches were played in a great spirit.

The match was played in Reading at Watlington House, a venue roughly halfway between both teams, which provided an excellent setting for the match. Venue details can be found here: https://www.watlingtonhouse.org.uk/hall-hire/

Hopefully in the future we may have a few more players representing the Evesham area and eventually Evesham Chess Club in Worcestershire chess competitions.

Another great evening of chess on 11/05/2026 with a strong mix of casual games and friendly conversation throughout the night, alongside plenty of casual games being played across the room.

One of the highlights of the evening saw Paul taking on four juniors at once in a simultaneous display, while adults across the club were also enjoying some strong chess and practice games.

It’s fantastic seeing such a good mixture of juniors, new players, casual players, and experienced players all enjoying the club together.

We are open again next Monday at Wallace House Community Centre, Evesham.

Another fantastic night at Evesham Chess Club! ♟️

We welcomed 21 players this week, including a few great new faces, with a brilliant mix of adults and juniors all enjoying over-the-board chess together in a friendly and growing community.

Sadly, we only managed to take one photo this time no camera, and too busy actually playing chess!

A huge thank you once again to Wallace House Community Centre for their continued support with the venue it’s making a real difference as we build chess in Evesham.

Please note: We are closed next week due to the Bank Holiday, so our next session will be Monday 11th May.

We’re excited to confirm that Evesham Chess Club will officially launch on Monday 20th April.

Whether you’re a complete beginner, a casual player, or an experienced competitor, you’re very welcome to join us for our first club night.

The launch will take place from 7:00pm – 8:45pm at Wallace House Community Centre, Oat Street, Evesham, WR11 4PJ.

Expect a relaxed and welcoming evening with friendly over-the-board chess, casual games for all abilities, and a chance to meet other local players.

Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

We’ll be using the free public space at Wallace House, and the café will be open during the evening.

We had a great turnout from a group of enthusiastic Evesham Chess Club organisers today!

It’s fantastic to see so much support and energy behind bringing regular chess to Evesham and the surrounding area. With this team involved, we’re confident we can turn our vision into a reality.

More details about our official launch day will be coming soon — watch this space! 👀

The organisers of Evesham Chess Club have agreed to meet this Sunday at 10:30am (22/02/2026) at Orto Lounge in Evesham to discuss the venue options we have identified and determine what would be acceptable for the club during its initial period.

The aim of the meeting is to make a clear decision so we can move forward with confidence and begin establishing regular sessions.

This meeting is primarily for those who have expressed an interest in being helping hands with running the club or taking on organiser roles, as they will be responsible for overseeing and running the club week to week.

That said, others are very welcome to attend if you would like to have a chat about the possible direction of the club.

We have also submitted an application to the English Chess Federation Grassroots Funding scheme on 11 January 2026 for equipment.

Read it here: https://www.eveshamobserver.co.uk/news/wanted-chess-enthusiasts-to-start-new-club-in-evesham/?

Since the piece went out, we’re up to 17 sign-ups — plenty to start a weekly chess night. We’re still working behind the scenes on venue options and speaking with the Worcestershire Chess Association (WCA) & the English Chess Federation (ECF).

Please keep spreading the word — every share helps!
